Billy Clone And The Same - X and Y (1979)

Billy Clone and the Same, along with The Consumers, led Arizona into the punk/new wave era in the late 70's. Bruce Connole, Damon Doiron and Mike Corte (whose untimely death from heroin ended the band) were the driving force behind the band. Connole and Doiron went on to fame in many other local Arizona bands throughout the years including The Jetzons, The Strand and The Revenants to name but a few. This 4 song ep is considered by some to be one of the best records ever released by an Arizona artist. X and Y was produced by the legendary Mike Condello. Mike Corte wrote all the songs. Released on Moon Dog Records. Instead of the customary side A and side B, the LP was labeled side X and side Y.

As an added bonus, I have included an extra song, from the 1979 LP "Arizona Sounds Volume 3 entitled "Don't Look Back". Much slower than the material on X and Y, it is still an outstanding track.

Does anyone know if Darrell Gleason, the original drummer is still around?

Someone gave me a bootleg tape of this in the late 80's in Albuquerque after a party. They mistakenly thought it was mine, presumably because I was one of the few people in Albuquerque listening to anything that wasn't The Scorpions, Journey, etc. I freakin' LOVED this tape! I turned some friends onto it. And years later, we still sing these songs. I'm downloading your files now, totally excited about hearing these songs again. THANK YOU!

Hi, Nice site. I was there for the whole thing. Friends with Bruce and Mike. Star System. Lets not forget The Jetzons. I have movies of The Clones when they backed The Ramones at Dooleys, and a Clone bootleg, if anyone cares to see or hear.

Very odd and very unfortunate that you'd connect these guys and the Consumers....Ick!

These guys were a cutesy-pie New Wave-y band (formerly the cover band The Doctors) who came along late in the process....hey, Cosmo Topper! Blue Shoez! Whoa!

Lame.

I was there at that time. Dated Mike a couple of times. I saw the decline of Mike through drug use. Tried it myself. But with Mike's death, I grew up and out. I left Phoenix and went down a different path than the one I might have had he lived.
I often think of everyone that I knew at that time. I hope they too survived.
What a loss. It was a great band.I just wish for all that drugs had never been a part of it. They would have been big time.

I just did a search for this band after hearing former drummer Darrell Gleason(at the Cactus Cafe here in Austin, TX) tell me some great stories about opening for the Police on their legendary station wagon tour of the U.S. So, David, Darrell has been living in Austin since '93.

Does anyone remember Marta or little Michael, the Magician who doubled for Herve Villechaize? Don't forget Suzan and the Erotics, or Blue Shoes, as part of the scene.
